So, you want to hear His voice?

Jesus answered, “It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Matthew 4:4

This is about hearing God's voice. Am I a pro at the subject? not quite. But I hear His voice and know His voice. He guides me and leads me deeper in His will. You want to achieve this too, so that is why I'm writing a series on this. It is not for the skeptics, but for those who are burning with this divine desire.

I'm a Christian and according to the Bible, hearing God's voice is supposed to be fundamental to normal Christianity. However, fleshly hype, the enemy's attempt to stop us from knowing the Lord and the illusion of separation from God (along with other things) have tainted this.
Steve Sampson in his book You can hear the voice of God puts it this way: "Hearing God's voice is encountering life."

Yes, it's possible to hear His voice. Yes, even daily. God loves to talk to His beloved. If this wasn't true, He wouldn't have inspired the Bible (which covers every aspect of our lives and His will), much less sent Jesus to pay the price for a relationship between us, following by the baptism of the Spirit. Jesus bridged the gap; the Holy Spirit is our telephone.

  • The first thing you need to do to hear the voice of God is to take time to listen to God. You must be in sync with the Holy Spirit, just like an iPod has to be in sync to be filled. This may just be the hardest guideline to follow. Be aware the enemy uses distractions and noise pollution to keep our hearts and minds busy. The flow of life from God's throne cannot be imitated and the enemy knows this! he'll do what it takes to keep our focus on earthly things.
  • Second, you must expect God to speak to you. He's God! His words are pure (Psalm 12:6) and He means it when He says that those that seek Him will find Him. So have faith and confidence when you approach Him!
  • Persevere. Make it a habit to meet with God on a daily basis. God honors faithfulness, so don't get discouraged if this is your first time trying to hear His voice and you feel like He's not really saying anything.
  • Set aside a place and a time to just listen to God. It's sort of like a date. I go to my prayer closet at a set time just to hear God; I don't journal, I don't speak, I don't think... I'm just silent and in reverence before the King. Start with just 10 minutes of silence & solitude. After 10 minutes, take 1 minute to praise God and another to pray. Prayer is a two-way conversation but until you get accustomed to discerning His voice you must do the listening more than the speaking (during silence and solitude. I expect you, as a Christian, are speaking to God all during the day. You can ask Him and intercede for things at another time that same day). Trust me, God doesn't forsake those that seek Him (Psalm 9:10). Eventually, you'll get so accustomed to His voice, you will be able to hear Him throughout your daily tasks.

  1. This is awesome girl! and so true! Sometimes we focus so much on talking to god we never take the time to sit down and listen to what HE is telling us, yet so much would get accomplished if we did! I can't wait to read your next post

  2. This is very encouraging. I am constantly surrounded by distractions and I need a reminder to be still before my King. I love how you made the analogy of the Holy Spirit being our telephone, allowing us to speak to God and listen to His voice. I can just see God's wisdom pouring out through your words. :)

  3. Thanks for the awesome post. It's a great reminder of how both listening and speaking is the true meaning of effective communication with God (which is vital when pursuing a great relationship with Him).
    Once again, thanks a bunch!
