Life like film

posted on: 9.10.2011

I was driving in my car, when the Lord spoke to my heart. I had been juggling a thousand thoughts about all I had to do the next couple of months and the Lord's voice was just absent. When was I going to know about school? What step was I to take next? Am I walking in full obedience? Is there anything else I must do? When was my last day at work? When would I be moving forward? Plus some more mindful thoughts.
And He spoke to me, the only way He knew I'd understand.

"You want your life to be like a polaroid, instant. But your life is not a polaroid, but a film camera. The results take time to develop. Through the dark my light shall expose it right. Wait on me."

I had just gotten a new film camera a couple of weeks back and I was having a lot of problems with the rolls of film. I think I lost like 3 rolls of film with that my new Canon (yes, I have quite a few film cameras). I was heartbroken. Each roll meant hope, and each hope was crushed when the roll came out 'blank'. In that moment I knew that He was using my new camera to teach me a life lesson; it was a parallel to my life in that moment.

I went to the Lord and surrendered all my worries. I asked forgiveness for my lack of patience and decided to live my day 'daily' instead of just being worried about the future. I had to silence my flesh and rest in who God was, and He was never late. The results were not my responsibility, but His! It was not my business to worry for something that never belonged to me. My life's results belong to Him.

On my next roll of film I realized that in my desperation to use my new film camera, I had loaded the film in wrong. I thanked the Lord for correcting me and bringing me to see my mistake. To my relief, that roll developed successfully. And a few weeks after that, the Lord came through for me with answers.

Please be patient with God. He is not bound by our time, much less our "instant gratification" life. Your life is not a polaroid. It's life like film.

  7. It's amazing, I was seriously struggling with the same concerns about the future when I received a word from a woman who felt it on her heart to share with me (and this was just last week!):

She told me of an illustration she's heard of walking on a dark road. We've seen the street light and have reached it, but when it is time to begin to move forward it is scary because what is ahead becomes very dim again. But, with each step we are able to find the next light pole to lead us to our next destination, and the next one, and so on.

She described it as "Step by step," which still brings me to tears just thinking of it.

Your illustration is absolutely perfect, and obviously touches many others.

  9. Oh wow. I needed that. I'm sure it's said a lot, but it was certainly true. In Francis Chan's book Crazy love he talks about how we are not to worry and pray about our whole life but about our day. What's God's plan for us TODAY.

  12. Thanks for sharing this, Ashes. I could totally relate to the Polaroid and film camera message... I also understand the frustration of losing and getting blank shots in film cameras. It's okay, it happens! And we'll just keep learning. :)

Hope you're doing well, lovely! xx
