The Power of The Word.

posted on: 2.27.2012

My lady asked me to write here about the use of scripture in my life. At first this seemed to be an easy feat, but proved to be rather hard. Why? Very simple: what do I write? Yes, I am in the written Word everyday and yes I love it dearly, but what else am I supposed to say?

Power.
The written Word of God has power.
How? Because it is GOD'S written Word!

Notice I say written Word, because in all actuality the Word of God is not the Bible. Yes, you read that right, the Word of God is Jesus Christ. John states this very clearly in John 1. He states,

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was god. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him and without Him was not any thing made that was made."

John is not talking about the Bible, but Jesus Christ. So what is the Bible? The Bible is the apostolic account (or written account) of the Word of God, that is Jesus Christ. Why do I say all of this? I say all of this because this explains why the Bible has power. The Bible, or written Word of God, is the account of Jesus Christ's impact on the world. There is power in Jesus Christ.

It's because of this power that makes reading and living the written Word of God so crucial to our lives. How can we expect to know Christ if we don't know His word? How can we expect to live a life of power and authority in Christ, if we aren't resting in His promises. There are so many defeated Christians in the world because they do not know how to stand on the written Word of God and receive the authority that He has given them through Christ Jesus. I genuinely don't know how I would function without the written Word of God. It is my key to the mind of God.

If you don't already have a devotion time, I encourage you to adopt one. One that I recommend is to choose any narrative in scripture, perhaps David (1 & 2 Samuel), or Esther, or Moses (Exodus), or Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and just read a chapter a day. Get a journal and go through S.O.A.P.

S.- Scripture (write down the scripture)
O.- Observation (Read over the scripture again and allow words or
phrases to pop out at you and write them down.)
A.- Application (Write out how what you observed can be applied to your life)
P.- Prayer (Write out a prayer to God to help you apply the scripture to your life.)

Getting into the written Word of God will single handily change your life. Don't believe me? Try it for one week and just see God move in your life. I know this because I am living it. God 87% of the time speaks to me through His word, and boy am I grateful for it!

If you are in the written Word regularly, please comment and share what you are currently reading. It's always encouraging to see what fellow sisters and brothers are reading in their time with the Lord.

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word."

  5. oh boy, I am either highly emotional or just being weakened by the power of my brothers and sisters faith and testimonies. Because here i am crying again, today. The first was over at Jennifer Blairs blog on going to Ethiopa to use her gifts to tell their stories.

    I'm a hottttt mess :).

I'm currently in 1peter and I say that because even though I have read through it I haven't fully grasped it and being a weird, psuedo-perfectionist I find it hard to read through a book and just go on to the next because I want VICTORY at the end. I want to KNOW 1Peter so when people ask me what I am reading I can not only say the book but tell them ALLL about it.

This my dear sister and brother is pride. Because NO ONE can fully know GOD. We can know the words and we can learn through walking out our faith of HIS character and we can grasp within the capacity he has given us a revelation of Himself but until we are WITH Him there are attributes and things of our heavenly Father that we will not fully know on earth.

That is in no way an excuse for believers to not be STRIVING to know God on this side of eternity. I just had to write that because I am such a prideful woman and I compete and with my walk and with GOD I can't seek that. He gives me all I need from His word whether it seems grand and profound or not. He is the giver, the author and finisher.

All that to say I am in 1Peter and i love this post so much I will be retweeting it right... now!

    Blessings to you guys :)

  6. encouraging and powerful post.
I am reading in Jeremiah right now and it's eye/heart opening to read how badly Israel and Judah turns from God and how we, as humans, today do the same thing.

I just wanted to point out that in the Bible Emergency Numbers the line for For idea of Christianity is actually 2 Cor 5:15-19. Hope that helps anyone who looks for that reference!

  7. you're seriously one of my favourite blogs because (1) i feel like we're chasing after much the same thing and (2) for consistent posts like this!

i do think that since i've been reading your blog, i have been challenged to really make Him a greater, more intentional part of my everyday life!

with that being said, i'm currently reading through Matthew, Isaiah, and the Message version's of the Pauline letters!

so cool that we have the "written" word of God and access to Him all the time. what a great God!

  9. Loved this. It's funny to find myself on this page tonight. I just spent the last portion of my night reading Psalm 119. One of my favorite things to do after reading Psalm 119 is to read John 1:14 THE WORD BECAME FLESH.
